The country, located in the Caribbean but bordering Mexico and Guatemala, is a stunning mix of gorgeous, sandy beaches, warm seas and jungles, forests and rivers inland and English is the official language.

Car rental in Belize is the perfect way to see the most of this interesting country, although many roads are very bumpy, so an SUV is recommended. There are beautiful waterfalls in the south near Big Jug, wonderful forests in the east and vibrant cities in the north. Flights are available direct from some large cities in Canada, usually without a layover.

Fishing for bonefish is one of the most popular things to do, as bonefish are one of the most difficult fish to catch. Sport fishing off the coast is popular, too, and scuba diving tours are also available in the stunning waters. There are tours of the thick jungles, which have many tropical birds, creatures and camps to visit.

The ancient Mayan cities are a fascinating attraction, notably Aultun Ha, Lamanai or the Caracol. There are also great museums that offer captivating insight into how Belize once was, and there are many exhibits of the artifacts on display. In Belize City, by the harbor, are some of the best restaurants and bars where expats and tourists love to hang out.

Best time to stay

Being a tropical country located near to the equator, the heat is intense and during the hot season (May to November) is very difficult to bear if you’re from the northern reaches of Canada. Although it’s still insanely hot, holidays between February and May are more bearable. Due to the heat and humidity, it’s vital to stay hydrated at all times as dehydration is a common problem for tourists who aren’t used to the heat. When renting a car in Belize, try to drive throughout the day times as the roads have big potholes and street lighting at night isn’t very good.
