Iceland is a popular vacation destination amongst Canadian travelers and is just a short flight from Toronto or Montreal. Iceland boasts an array of things to do and see including active volcanoes and stunning glaciers. The country is also famous for its natural hot springs that are believed to promote good health. Driving is a good way to move around easily here and many Canadians opt for car renting while vacationing in Iceland.
What to do
The capital city is home to most of the country’s best attractions and regular festivals too. When in the capital, be sure to visit Nautholsvik, which is a naturally heated beach area. Not only is it immensely beautiful but the waters are perfectly heated. Heiomork is a large and beautiful forest area that has been well looked-after and can be reached easily when using a car rental.
The largest national park called Vatnajokullspjoogarour and is located in the southeastern portion of the island. It features towering mountains and great thermal pools. There are also some great scenic beaches on the island, although the water is far too cool for swimming.
Iceland’s roads
The main roads in Iceland are excellent and driving is pretty safe. Canadian drivers will find there are road signs in both English and Icelandic, which makes driving navigation simple. However, the roads in the mountainous areas can be hazardous and it’s worth asking about this when picking up a rental car.
Climate
The climate of Iceland is unusual because of its geographical location. Over the whole year, temperatures are mild considering the latitude but winters are still generally colder than most places in continental Europe. Summertime is when most choose to visit since the sun almost never sets and things are green and festive at this time.
