Kenya Car rentals

The two main places for car rental in Kenya are the major cities of Mombassa and the capital Nairobi. Canadian visitors will generally need to fly via Europe or the Middle East to both locations and from there an independent traveler can stay on the lovely shores of the Indian Ocean or can head into the many big game parks of the country; Kenya remains one of the best countries in Africa for seeing wildlife in natural habitats.

Highlights

It was Dr. Livingstone who set off the looking for the source of the Nile but came to discover Lake Victoria in 1855. The huge Victoria Falls and the Victoria basin are just some of the dramatic scenes awaiting visitors coming to this country. Add to that the awe-inspiring sights of the Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro, the umpteen safari parks and the serene beaches and it is easy to see why Kenya remains one the world’s top vacation destinations.

Of all the highlights, the chance to spend time out in the wild tracking lions, elephants, giraffes and hippos is perhaps the main reason people come to Kenya. The spaces are huge, but with a good Land Rover to drive around in and comfortable overnight stops in selected safari resorts camps, the rigors of the Kenyan Safari are now more manageable and more comfortable.

Exploring by car

For safari-bound holidaymakers, car rental in the national parks is selected on the basis of strength and durability, so a right-hand drive Land Rover is the most popular. Car rental agencies generally will fit it out with water bottles, spades and a whole host of extras as part of the rental deal. For the less adventurous, a standard car rental agency is fine for a trip along the Indian Ocean coast, and the best rates are found by doing car rental compare in advance.

Tourist season and weather

The rainy seasons in Kenya can have an effect on the roads that head into the national parks, so the drier season in January through to March is better for this type of trip. The mountains south of Kisumu see steady rain, as does the Victoria basin. The average temperature for the cooler season in the early part of the year is around 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
