The capital of Riga itself is a highlight as the old town retains lovely wooden structures that line the harbor districts. But further out there are some magnificent palaces and castles and one that travelers from Canada should not miss is the Rundale Palace, which can only be described as stunning. The palace was built in the mid 1700s for the Duke of Courland and has been preserved as one of the country’s top attractions and museums.

In the more modern areas, there are theme parks and an aqua-park along the coast from Riga, which also has a castle in the older part of town. So if it’s the architecture from previous centuries that appeals to you, then Latvia is one of the best places in Europe to discover the most authentic structures and car rental is a great way to see it all.

Exploring by car

The network of roads in Latvia is excellent as this has always been something of a trading centre. Years ago, merchants from the western parts of Europe would transport their goods through here to the east and on to places as far away as Persia. Latvia drives on the right side of the road and visitors must have an international license.
Tourist season and weather

The most favorable time in Latvia is the summer months, when the majority of tourists arrive from across the continent. July through to early September is the best period and May is also very popular. This eastern portion of Europe sees harsh winters, which are best avoided.
