Lithuania Car Rentals

Visitors coming to Lithuania have increased in recent years as the country has gained popularity as being one of culture and historical interest. For Canadian visitors, the option to fly to Amsterdam and then make one change to come here allows for an easy trip. The airport at Vilnius has four national and international operators and on arrival the Canadian traveler can arrange a car rental as long as they have held a license for at least two years.

Highlights

Lithuania is largely rural, and although there are the bigger cities of Vilnius and Kaunus, good highways and smart hotels, much of the country is still based around farming. There are great national parks to discover that are habitats for a wonderful range of rare bird life and wildlife. There are the five national parks: Aukštaitijos, Dzūkijos, Žemaitijos, Kuršių nerijos and Trakų, which feature protected unspoiled marshlands and provide the ideal environment for the birds and animals.

Vilius was declared European Capital of Culture soon after the country joined the European Union, so there is some credence to the claim that the new capital has a wealth of cultural attractions. The churches and the old town are all places to look out for on a trip around the city. This kind of trip may require a smaller vehicle but looking ahead by looking to compare car rental models is a sensible option.

Exploring by car

The main routes in Lithuania are very good and have been upgraded as the country has generally improved the infrastructure. Getting from Vilnius to the other regions is done along two-lane highways, but there are some quite strict rules on speed and the use of headlights on all vehicles including the car rental. The main cities of Klaunas and Klaipeda are easily accessible, as are the smaller towns along the Baltic Sea.

Tourist Season and Weather

The winters here are quite mild as the Baltic provides some warmer temperatures, but the main time to visit Lithuania is during the summer months of July and August. This is the busiest time, so the other option is to make a visit slightly out of season and earlier in the year. May is a great time to enjoy the national parks, the castles and the gardens.
