Highlights

The lakes at Ohrid are among the most popular destinations for visitors, both national and international. The old church nestled on the shores of the Lake Ohrid is just one feature that draws people to the region. It is quite easily reached along the main E75 road. Also in this region, which borders Greece, is the town of Bitola and the Lake Prespa with the island of Golem Grad.

Many of the attractions of Macedonia relate to the ancient Byzantine period and the Ottoman Empire. As such there are plenty of ancient religious buildings to be found across the country.
The monasteries are particularly interesting with those such as the Marko Monastery, which is close enough to Skopje to make a day excursion in the hire car easy.

Exploring by Car

Car rental is something which provides that extra bit of convenience for travelers who enjoy making their own schedule and Macedonia is ideal for traveling around by road. The regulations here are the same as those found in all European Union countries. Renters must be at least 23 and need for a valid driving license from their home country. Once on the road ,there is a good mix of fast European highways and rural routes out along the lake land regions to the south.

Macedonia is a year-round tourist destination, as it has the mountain ranges that provide good skiing as well as great summertime hotspots. As yet relatively quiet compared with the Alps, the time will come when the country is seen as major winter vacation destination. In the summer, the climate is pleasantly warm without ever getting too hot. This is the most poplar time of the year for national and international visitors.
