Malta Car Rentals

Driving in Malta is a relaxing experience, so those coming from the quieter parts of Canada need not worry about getting caught up in traffic jams. The island is reached primarily by air from most of the major European capitals including Paris, Rome, Oslo, London and Zurich. On arrival there are counters in the airport for car hire collection to be arranged, and then it’s time to head off onto the open road.

Highlights

There is a wealth of history to Malta which goes back to Roman times. Napoleon called in here and then the British took over up until the mid 1960’s when Malta became independent. All there eras are well documented in the various museums of the main city of Valetta. The museum at the Cathedral is one place which history buffs will enjoy, but there is also the Archeological Museum and the Maritime Museum.

The island is dotted with small village communes, but the resort towns show a good deal of sophistication with the Sleima promenade a great place to take an evening stroll.

There are two smaller islands neighboring Malta and they are Gozo and Comino which are connected by ferries. The car hire can be left for a day excursion to these islands which have remarkable natural features and great beaches and waters for swimming in the Blue Lagoon and snorkeling.

Exploring by Car

Malta does not require a particularly big car to drive around, and as the entire island is relatively flat there are few reason for an over powerful engine. So when making a comparison check for car rental, the models to go for are the eco friendly smaller vehicles. In contrast to Canada, this is very easy driving country. The rules are the same as the British regulations, so driving is on the left. The island is extremely easy to explore with plenty of small villages where local produce can be bought and the tasty food sampled.

Tourist Season and Weather

Although occasionally buffeted by sea storms in the winter months, Malta has a moderate climate which is enjoyed across the whole of the Mediterranean. In the summer months of June, July and August the visitor numbers swell, but there are many who come here for a arm winter break from the harsh North European climates.
