Martinique Car Rentals
Travelers from the French speaking parts of Canada will hear the familiar tones of the Gallic language here on Martinique in the Caribbean. This is one of the furthest outposts of the French Republic and is certainly one of the most distant European Union countries.
With that strong connection, it’s no surprise that getting to this island from Canada can be a direct flight from Montréal, with Air Canada the prime carrier. Car rental is available at Fort de France airport and from there is a good fast road straight into the island capital.
Highlights
Diving in the clear Caribbean waters is a favorite vacation activity, with the long sandy beach at La Salines the most popular. Some would say over popular as it gets very busy in the high season. That may the time to take the car rental for a spin around the rest of the island to see the inland slopes of the volcanic Mount Pelee, and the black sand beaches on the northern coast at La Carbet.
In the main town of Fort de France the cathedral draws the attention and just as a reminder of the French heritage of Martinique there is a one fifth replica of the Sacre Coeur. France is very dominant in all aspects of Martinique but the cuisine has a distinctly Caribbean flavor with one local dish consisting of fish cooked in a rum batter.
Exploring by Car
The roads on the island are good, and there are fast highways from the airport to Fort de France. The local police have been trying to curb the speeding by installing speed cameras so that is something to watch out for on the main roads. But out around the island the driving is relaxing and all the coastal towns can be explored. As a holiday vacation island there is a tremendous choice so doing some car rental comparisons is worth it, ahead of the vacation.
Tourist Season and Weather
Martinique has two distinct seasons with the period from December to April being the best time for the sun and the sea. However that is also when it gets very busy, so although the weather is more humid, the lower season from April to October will offer a more cost effective trip. There may be some cloudy days with high humidity, but there are plenty of great places to swim and cool off
