Mauritius

Mauritius Car Rental

The road system on the island is very straightforward so once the plane has touched down then it’s into the arrivals hall and time to collect the car rental. Flights from Canada are not that easy and involves a journey via London or Johannesburg. But on the positive side this an island which deserves the effort of a long trip, and once here, the cold winters of home will seem a million miles away.

Highlights

Mauritius has great shopping, food, beaches and a smattering of historic landmarks. The Europeans all left their mark here, from the Portuguese sailors who named one of their structures after the local turtles to the French named beaches of Le Morne. This is just one of the great surfing beaches on the island. There are some good conservation projects under way in the south east of the island so those interested in eco tourism will be keen to see the work of the Mauritius Wildlife Fund at Ile Aux Aigrettes.

The north holds all the cards for general sun drenched days of swimming and snorkeling. Grand Bay is the place locals go to for a night out, which gives some idea of how good this location is. The restaurants and shops combine with the large bay, making for a relaxing sunny day which will finish with a sumptuous seafood dinner.

Exploring by Car

Car rental comes from a wide range of operators so to compare car rental rates is a good idea before leaving home. Once out on the roads the motoring vacation can take advantage of the main routes from the airport and the capital of Port Louis to the eastern sector of the island. From there it is either north or south with a few secondary roads to the north west of the island. The car will bring the convenience to try different beaches, but remember that driving here is on the left, with right hand drive cars.

Tourist Seasons and Weather

There’s little to worry about when it comes to weather and the Canadian visitor in January will be delighted to be sitting on a beach in 25 degrees of sunshine. That’s about the median temperature in the high season which runs through to April. The mountain areas remain cooler and if there is a difference then it could be said that the north and the west are the drier regions.
