Namibia

Namibia car rentals

This stunning destination is unquestionably one of the most beautiful countries in Southern Africa. Canadians come to enjoy a holiday filled with stunning landscapes, exotic wildlife and German colonial architecture. It is also home to the highest quality diamonds in the world. By first flying to Frankfurt or Munich, it is easy to arrive here from any Canadian city.

Highlights

Most of the main sights can be found throughout the north of the country and are reachable by driving from the capital city of Windhouk, which is also the main gateway into Namibia. The Etosha National Park is a wildlife lovers haven and some of Africa’s most well known animals can be spotted here. The seal colonies at the Skeleton Coast National Park should be on all itineraries, while the town of Spitzkoppe is known as the Matterhorn of Namibia.

Those wanting to enjoy the beach can do so in the coastal town of Swakopmund. The Namib Desert is one of the country’s main draws and the desert town of Sossusvlei is its main entry point. It boasts some fantastic scenery and is an ideal place for watching desert sunrises or hiking through the dunes. The magnificent Fish River Canyon Park is a favorite to many and is well worth heading south to explore.

Exploring by car

Driving a car rental is the most ideal way to get around and the roads are in great condition. Driving at night should be avoided, as much wildlife tends to appear on the roads at this time making it quite dangerous. Otherwise, car rental is a fantastic way to tour around for those over the age of 23. An international driver’s license is not necessary although Canadians will need a valid driver’s license from their own country.

Tourist season and weather

July to October seems to be the busiest time to visit although the weather is most ideal between October and December. In the summer months, the temperature in the desert can soar and many Canadians will find it unbearable. The northeast region sees subtropical weather including heavy rainfalls from January to April.
