Flowers and windmills have become a trademark of the country and the towns of Keukenhof and Kinderdijk is where these are best seen. The Hoge Veluwe National Park also has some stunning flowers along with a spectacular museum, sand dunes and picturesque grasslands. The country’s most southern city of Maastricht is ideal for those wanting to dine in fine restaurants and witness some stunning architecture.

Amsterdam is the main gateway and is the most popular destination, attracting millions of tourists each year. It is known for its historic architecture, museums, lovely canals and infamous Red Light District. All visitors should spend a few days here before visiting its stunning surrounding villages such as Muiden, which houses the Muiderslot Castle and the historically significant village of Harleem. Both are reachable within 30 minutes via car rental.

Exploring by car

Driving a car rental is an ideal way to visit the Dutch countryside, however it is unnecessary in Amsterdam. They roads are excellent throughout the entire country and parking is quite easy to find and sometimes even free. Be aware that there are plenty of radar machines and unmarked traffic surveillance cars so be sure to consistently check your speed.

Tourist season and weather

Summer time is typically the most popular time to visit although many Canadians prefer to visit in the spring when the flowers are in bloom. However, the coastal beaches are best in summer. October to March is the least popular time of year and is great for those wanting to avoid the crowds, however it is not ideal for walking along the canals or enjoying the flowers.
