Over two million tourists visit this stunning island destination each year, many of which are Canadians escaping the cold winter months back home. Its excellent French cuisine, beautiful beaches, amazing coral reefs and rugged mountains make it worth the journey that is easily arrived in via Japan or South Korea.

Highlights

Diving and snorkeling are one of the island’s main draws thanks to the stunning coral reef that surrounds it. Additionally, the world’s largest enclosed lagoon can be found here making it an excellent place for enjoying all kinds of water sports. White sand beaches, turquoise seas and tropical vegetation can be witnessed on the Ile de Pins just off of the southern tip of the main island.

The capital and largest city of Noumea should be visited for a few days either upon entering or before leaving the island, as it is also the port of entry. Here, the magnificent Tjibaou Cultural Centre is a must see, as is the Michel Corbasson Zoological and Forest Park. The mountains, rock formations and waterfalls known to the island should be included on any itinerary and are best visited through the small town of Hiéngène and accessible with a car rental.

Exploring by car

Car rental is an ideal way to explore the island outside of the capital city, where a car is not necessary. Some of the more off-the-beaten-path areas are not accessible by any other form of transport, making a car rental an excellent option. The roads throughout the island are in good condition, although a good road map is a must and visitors are advised to compare car rental options before venturing out.

Tourist season and weather

From December to March, Canadians will find the weather most appealing although some may find the humidity a bit much to handle and tropical storms are a risk. The winter in New Caledonia runs from April to August and temperatures can drop to 22 Degrees Celsius.
