Nicaragua car rentals
This Central American destination is fast becoming popular among Canadians; many choose to enjoy an inexpensive holiday here to escape the cold winters at home. The country features a large freshwater lake, beautiful beaches and the interior is filled with mountains, volcanoes and waterfalls. The stunning scenery throughout makes it obvious why so many Canadians visit here.
Highlights
Pacific and Central Nicaragua are the most visited areas and this is where most of the colonial buildings, nightlife and shopping opportunities can be found. The vibrant city of Leon is home to the Cathedral of Leon, while Granada is famous for its stunning architecture, which includes six wonderful churches. The massive freshwater Lake Nicaragua is the largest of its kind on the continent and is easy to reach by rental car from either or these cities.
The magnificent Island of Ometepe can be found in Lake Nicaragua and is a must for all. Here visitors can climb up to the top of Volcan Concepcion and Volcan Maderas to witness some breathtaking views. Another favorite, although less visited, are the Corn Islands within the Caribbean Sea. These two islands are known for their fantastic diving and snorkeling.
Exploring by car
A rental car is a great way to get around Pacific and Central Nicaragua, however the Caribbean side does not have the best roads and public transport should be used. Car hire allows visitors to explore the interior of the island. As well as taking stunning drives along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Drivers need to be 25 to acquire a car rental, but an international driver’s license is not required.
Tourist season and weather
From December to April is the dry season and is the most ideal for Canadian travelers. At times is can become quite hot but a trip to the mountains is a great way to cool down. The wet season from May to November is not the best time to visit as you will find that you will spend much of your time avoiding the torrential downpours.
