Wahiba Sands is a popular tourist destination known for its stunning desert sand dunes and Bedouin people whose colorful costumes make for great photographs. Further south is the beautiful city of Shalah, which is best visited during its annual Khareef Festival.
Muscat is the main gateway to the Sultanate and is a great attraction in itself. Its Grand Mosque, Grand Palace, superb markets and stunning forts make it a great introduction to the rest of the country. From here, Canadians can take a car rental to the close by UNESCO World Heritage Site Bahla Fort as well as the Wadi Shab. Both are quite impressive and should be included on all itineraries.
Exploring by car
The roads are in great condition, especially in Northern Oman, making touring around with car rental a great idea. A four-wheel drive should be considered, as it will allow you to explore some off-road areas within the desert sand dunes. Female travelers should be aware that it is a good idea to cover their head while driving around to steer away local men.
Tourist season and weather
The tourist season is from November to March when the temperature is more bearable and visitors can escape the winter at home. Accommodations call fill up in the more popular areas and in some cases higher premiums are charged. Although some tourists do prefer to visit during the hot season the temperatures can rise to as high as 129.2 °F, making it unpleasant for some.
