Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea car rentals

Many Canadians love to spend time in untouched destinations and Papua New Guinea is just that. Its 11 regions consist of rugged mountainous terrain, rainforests, coral reefs and exotic languages, all of which make for an extremely unique and rewarding vacation. Canadians will find that it is worth the long journey consisting of a short stop over in Japan, Hong Kong or Singapore.

Highlights

Madang is one of the most popular tourist destinations due to its accessibility to the mountains, waterfalls and stunning rainforests throughout the region. The Kokoda Track is famous amongst trekkers and starts in the capital city of Port Moresby. Here you will find the impressive Botanical Gardens, Moitaka Wildlife Sanctuary and some great markets and it is worth spending a couple of days in upon arriving or before exiting the island nation.

Truly off the beaten track is the stunning island of Bougainville, which has excellent diving opportunities and some fantastic long treks. Those in good shape can spend days trekking through the Emporer Range exploring Mount Balbi and Mount Bagana. The island of New England is also a good choice and more accessible than Bougainville.

Exploring by car

In some areas of Papua New Guinea roads do not exist, however throughout areas on the main island a car rental is a great way to explore, especially in the Highlands. A four-wheel drive is your best bet, although be aware that locals are known to throw stones at vehicles. Within the cities there are a number of car hire agents but be sure to shop around and compare car hire quality and prices.

Tourist season and weather

The tourist season is at Christmas and Easter and some accommodations can fill up. Another good time to visit is from June to September, which is the best time for trekking. The temperature is hot and humid all year but can get chilly in the mountains so be prepared if you’re going on a long trek. December to March is the wet season and sees torrential downpours.
