Poland is not as frequently visited as many other European countries although it can be equally rewarding and offers far more value for money. Canadians will find its combination of old and new captivating while its beautiful landscapes, stunning countryside, Baltic beaches and scenic rivers make it well worth the visit. It is also extremely easy to get to, as there are direct flights from Toronto, or via connections in any major US or European air hub.

Highlights

The commercial town of Poznan has become a favorite to many and features the awe-inspiring Ostrów Tumski (Cathedral Island) and medieval old-town square of Stary Rynek. South of here is the historic city of Wroclaw and the city of Krakow, which is known for its magnificent Middle Age architecture and houses Europe’s largest medieval market. It is also close to Auschwitz, one of Poland’s most visited sites, and is quickly reachable by car.

At the heart of Poland is the city of Warsaw, which is a worthwhile attraction in itself. It features the Palace of Culture and Science, the Royal Castle and the National Gallery and numerous other attractions. North of the capital is the Gothic town of Torun, where the Old Town district has earned UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The coastal community of Gdansk showcases some magnificent gothic buildings and also boasts some nice beaches.

Exploring by car

The roads are generally not as good as in other European countries’ however renting a car is a great way to explore the countryside and less-traveled areas. That being said, car rental is not cheap in Poland and visitors are advised to shop around and compare car rentals to best suit their individual needs. It should also be noted that the driving laws in Poland are quite different than in Canada; drivers should make themselves aware of these before setting out.

Tourist season and weather

Poland can be visited at any time of year, but its main tourist season is in July and August and places can become quite crowded. Many Canadians prefer to visit in the spring, when the weather is nice and there are much fewer tourists around. Poland also has some great skiing opportunities and these attract a fair share of winter tourists.
