Highlights

San Juan is the capital and most visited tourist destination, with its stunning beaches, magnificent forts, diverse markets and divine cuisine. Many Canadians even spend their entire vacation here. The south coast city of Ponte offers a similar experience but on a much smaller scale and is the gateway to the beautiful Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island).

The laid back west coast town of Rincon is famous for its surfing and almost resembles a surfing community in California. Along the east coast is the town of Luquillo, which gives access into the magnificent El Yunque National Forest, while similar Fajardo is known for its Bio-Luminescent Bay.

Exploring by car

Driving in Puerto Rico is very easy and the roads are in fantastic shape. A car rental is ideal for exploring the island outside of San Juan and visiting its many beaches and interior mountainous region. It is easy to acquire a car rental at the airport where there are many options to choose from. Be sure to compare car rental options in advance to obtain the best deal.

Tourist season and weather

The tourist season is from December to May when the weather is most pleasant but it is also the most crowded time to visit (and accommodations tend to be more expensive). This can be avoided by visiting at the very beginning or very end of the season. It is hurricane season from June to November and visiting at this time should is generally avoided.
