Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia car rentals

Although Saudi Arabia is still seen as one of Earth’s last few ‘forbidden’ kingdoms, millions of international visitors travel to this Middle Eastern nation every year, though few are from Canada; most come from predominantly Muslim nations for a once-in-a-lifetime holy experience. That said, Canadians making the trip are generally surprised not only by the underwater splendour of the Red Sea, endless deserts and fascinating cities, but also by the genuine hospitality of Bedouin culture.

Highlights

The fast-growing urban and political centre of Saudi Arabia, Riyadh, is visited by a large percentage of the country’s tourists; however, most Westerners are likely to head straight to Jeddah, the country’s fast-changing, cosmopolitan resort-heavy city situated on the shores of the Red Sea. From here, many take advantage of car rental and head to nearby Mecca (where only Moslems are permitted entry), the cultural heart of Islam and a fascinating historical destination, or head inland to Medina, another holy centre for Muslims from around the world. Meanwhile, the vast Empty Quarter provides visitors with views of endless sand dunes, while divers can enjoy world-class sea life below the surface of the Red Sea just off Saudi Arabia’s coastline.

Exploring by car

Visitors are advised to compare car rental options and take advantage of all that a vehicle has to offer for those visiting this vast country; it, can make for a fantastic way to travel. For the most part, roads are well kept, but visitors must be aware that women are not allowed to drive or ride a bicycle in Saudi Arabia. A Canadian license is sufficient for temporary male visitors and driving is done on the right side of the road.

Tourist season and weather

Because the majority of the country is far too hot for comfort much of the year, the winter months in the northern hemisphere (November – February) are by far the best time to visit Saudi Arabia. Many Westerners avoid the Hajj period due to the crowds, as well as the month of Ramadan, which can make it difficult to find a meal during daylight hours.
