Car rentals South Africa
Many Canadians visiting South Africa find themselves returning earlier than expected, not only because of its phenomenal natural splendour and fascinating cultures, but also because there’s always more to see in this incredibly diverse land. Scattered across South Africa are phenomenal mountain ranges, iconic coastlines, flourishing wildlife and an eclectic mix of native African and European cultures.
Highlights
A stay in the capital of Johannesburg can serve as a good introduction to the country, while those starting or ending a stay in cosmopolitan Cape Town can enjoy world-class hospitality set to the backdrop of lovely beaches and views of Table Mountain. Moving inland, visitors can utilize car rental and head for the immense Kruger National Park to gaze out over lion prides and herds of wild elephants, or can explore the countryside and wineries situated along the much-loved Garden Route. Meanwhile, the snow-capped peaks, scenic hiking trails and quaint towns of the Drakensburg offer a great high-altitude alternative to South Africa’s great east coast beach resorts.
Exploring by car
South Africa is an excellent destination for exploring via car rental; most of the country’s roads are well maintained. However, as a Canadian it may be unusual getting used to driving on the left side of the road and tourists should be aware that frequent traffic accidents are an ongoing problem in South Africa. Those visiting during the summer, especially over holidays, should compare car rental choices and book vehicles well in advance if at all possible.
Tourist season and weather
South Africa features a number of microclimates, which vary depending on elevation and each location’s distance from either ocean. For this reason weather can be pleasant for a visit any time of year; however outdoor activities including wildlife watching is better during cooler and drier winter months (June through September), while beachgoers may be better suited during the summer, although hotels and car rental rates are often higher during this period, rising accordingly with demand.
