Car rentals Spain

Spain has long been a traveler favourite among Europeans and continues to attract Canadians as well. This world-class destination boasts unmatched history, attractive beaches and coastline, great cuisine, snowcapped peaks and some of the world’s most exciting cities, making it well worth the reasonably long flight from Toronto, Montreal and other major gateways.

Highlights

One of Spain’s great historical gems, the economic, political and geographical heart of the country –Madrid- is an excellent tourist attraction in itself and a great place to grab car rental for moving onward. To the north is fantastic hiking, skiing and outdoor activities in the Pyrenees, while a scenic drive to the east will often end in Barcelona, a Catalonian coastal gem and one of the world’s ‘most livable’ cities. Out at sea, to the south and east, is Ibiza, a consistent favourite for island lovers and nightlife buffs from far and wide.

Exploring by car

Spain’s vast array of great attractions and the distance between them make car rental a great option for a visit. Canadians generally do fine in local conditions; driving takes place on the right and roads are well maintained. However, fast-paced and erratic traffic in major cities can cause headaches. Drivers must have an international driving permit.

Tourist season and weather

July and August are the height of tourist season in Spain, particularly in coastal locations, while wintertime visitors generally head for the higher elevations. Inland areas in have a climate similar to those in North America, while the coastal areas enjoy a much milder winter, albeit a bit wet at times. If you’re headed over in the summer, be sure to book and compare car rental and hotel options ahead of time.
