Thailand car rentals
A steady stream of Canadians find their way to Thailand as visitors or resident expats, and it offers a balmy alternative to frigid North American winters. Fourteen million visitors arrive every year, suggesting that Thailand is one of Asia’s most popular destinations, and for good reason; its famous food, stunning beaches and islands, rich legacy of culture and famous Thai smile leave a lasting impression.
Highlights
Phuket is the most-visited tourist destination, with its lovely beaches and excellent tourist infrastructure, though a similar experience can be had at the picturesque Krabi – both are within a day trip of stunning islands like Phi Phi and the evocative formations of Phang Nga bay. Samui is another good choice, along with the heady seaside town of Pattaya or quieter Hua Hin, both of which are closer to the capital and reachable in a rental car.
Bangkok itself is the main gateway to the Kingdom. It’s a proud showcase to the country, with its Grand Palace, numerous sparkling temples, excellent shopping, great value hotels and buzzing nightlife. Plan to spend a few days there.
Exploring by car
Driving in Thailand can be tricky if you’re from Canada, they drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the road, sometimes unintentionally – the locals are rather lax with road rules. All the same, a rental car is a good idea once out of Bangkok for exploring the pretty countryside and for visiting historic gems like Ayutthaya, Sukhothai and Chiang Mai, or for seeking out your own private beach on the islands.
Tourist season and weather
The tourist season extends from November to February when the weather is most pleasant and most visitors prefer to escape the snow. Expect hotels to be less cheap, and often full during peak times. The rainy season isn’t always rainy and can be a pleasant alternative, from June to October. Coming from Canada you will want to avoid the severe tropical heat of March and April.
