Car rentals Ukraine

Although most Canadians spend European holidays in the western portion of the continent, those heading on to Ukraine discover a world of well tended gardens, bizarre and beautiful landscapes and fascinating post-communism architecture and history. The country’s “Orange Revolution” only took place in 2004 and although things are still rough around the edges within the Ukraine’s political system, its people look onward to the future and tourism plays a big part in the process.

Highlights

Most visitors make their way into the Ukraine via its charismatic capital, Kiev (Kyiv), known as the Garden City of Eastern Europe, with architecture and other interesting landmarks to keep visitors busy for much more than just a few days. From here, many head into the country via car rental to gems such as Kamyanets-Podilsky, which boasts rich medieval styling on a rock island in the middle of the stunning Smotrych River canyon. Meanwhile, the coastal city of Odessa offers attractive accommodation and chic clubs along the shores of the Black Sea, while a vast array of fantastic hiking opportunities await in the Carpathian Mountains.

Exploring by car

Driving takes place on the right-hand side of the road in Ukraine, which should please Canadian visitors. However, conditions of the roads range from good in major cities to very poor and somewhat dangerous in rural areas, so keep this in mind when considering car rental as your transport option. Moreover, for summer visits, compare car rental rates ahead of time to ensure availability and competitive rates.

Tourist season and weather

Ukraine’s climate varies somewhat from region to region, though overall there are four distinct seasons much like those seen in Canada. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable and the latter perhaps the most scenic due to blooming wildflowers, though summertime is peak season for tourism.
