Car rentals British Virgin Islands
Among the Caribbean’s greatest gems are the British Virgin Islands: a small archipelago of stunning natural beauty just a short flight from Canadian cities. Here, visitors can enjoy picture-perfect beaches, excellent diving, stunning Oceanside cliffs, warm sunshine and cool sea breezes throughout the year.
Highlights
Most visits begin with a stay in Rode Town, where shopping galore and plenty of drinking establishments can be found thanks to its cruise ship port, although this is generally a springboard for the BVIs much more scenic areas like the phenomenal coves, pools, boulders and gentle hillsides of nearby Virgin Gorda Island, as well as massive cliffs overlooking the Caribbean at Jost Van Dyke, the sparsely populated western-most island. Meanwhile, back on Tortola island, plenty of excellent beaches await in places like Cane Garden Bay and remote Trunk Bay, which are easily reached via car hire and the island’s scenic roads.
Exploring by car
Car rental is a good choice for Canadians spending several days on Virgin Gorda or Tortola and is excellent for reaching the most pristine beaches and snorkeling spots. Moreover, a drive over the spine of Tortola is an attraction in itself and offers fantastic views of the sea and surrounding islands. Be aware however that roads are narrow and locals often drive excessively fast.
Tourist season and weather
Weather is always warm and pleasant in the British Virgin Islands, though hurricanes are a risk from June to November and especially in August and September. Most Canadians visit between December and April when the weather is cold back home. Hotel and car rental rates peak over Christmas, New Year’s and Easter, so book in advance and compare car hire rates before traveling over the holidays.
